DVF for Claridges

Wednesday, March 10th, 2010

Ok, we know you can’t actually wear an hotel but this is surely the next best thing.

Much-lauded fashion designer Diane von Furstenberg who reinvented the wrap-dress for a whole new generation is set to unveil her first interior design project. In June of this year, the esteemed fashionista will launch a series of rooms and suites at Claridge’s Hotel.

DVF Claridges -- FINAL 1

Her signature style of iconic prints and bold colours is the perfect fit for Mayfair’s Art Deco landmark and with original pieces of furniture to boot, the collaboration is sure to be the talk of the town!

Furstenberg is a longtime guest and friend of the hotel, having enjoyed an intimate relationship since the 1970s and some of her collections have even been inspired by her favourite London hideaway.

Indeed, one of the designer’s fondest memories was her first stay in the hotel as a young, independent businesswoman. “I knew I had made it,” she breathes, “to me, Claridge’s is the most glamorous hotel in the world and I regard it as my home away from home.”

So, it’s a wrap then, just make sure you don’t clash with the wallpaper!

The Last McQueen

Wednesday, March 10th, 2010

The house of Alexander McQueen presented the final collection worked on by the talented designer yesterday in Paris, to a select audience of the fashion world’s journalists. Uncompleted when he passed away last month, the finishing touches to the pieces were under the control of Sarah Burton, with whom McQueen worked for sixteen years.

The collection was described by those present as hauntingly beautiful, drawing on the most theatrical of tones which have infiltrated McQueen’s work for years. Rather than reaching for the future, the clothes channel the Old Masters, with angels and demons from religious scenes adorning the heavy fabrics alongside hand-painted gold feathers and embroidery. Full accessories accompanied the pieces, from detailed glass necklaces to heavy footwear featuring the eponymous McQueen skull.

The show’s notes simply read, “Each piece was unique, as was he.”

Parent company to the label PPR has announced that the McQueen name will continue to trade, although the leading creative director is yet to be settled.

Kate M

After many seasons as the face of iconic bag make Longchamp, Kate Moss has created a unique collection with Longchamp’s Artistic Director, Sophie Delafontaine.  Following a rumage in Kate’s wardrobe, Sophie and Kate used Kate’s expertise from the catwalk and travel combined with her passion for fashion to create the new range.

The collection is diverse in both style and size, from the classic duffle Gloucester handbag (£590.00) adorned with heavy buckles, drawing inspiration from vintage travel trunks to the Sohoclutch (£290.00), a versitile little bag essential for a girls nightout.  So, whether its roaming the streets of a far flung city, hitting the tiles or strolling the around Labroke Grove with the Ladbroke bag, the dynamic partnership seems to have all bases covered.

As Kate has designed a cute bag range for us, Longchamp thinks its time for our imagination to go wild.  Longchamp have come up with a competition using Twiller, a combination of twitter and thriller it is a short on-line narrative.  They are inviting Kate and Longchamp fans to come up with their own Kate inspired twiller to be in with a chance of winning one of her gorgeous bags or her personal playlist.  To enter a twiller go to: www.tell-me-about-her.com.

Naomi Campbell for Haiti

Last night on the eve of London Fashion Week, supermodel Naomi Campbell held a star-studded catwalk show at LFW’s new home, Somerset House in aid The White Ribbon Alliance’s work for the Haiti disaster.

Celebrity friends Kate Moss, Geri Halliwell, Girls Aloud singers Nicola Roberts and Kimberley Walsh, Jamelia, Erin O’Connor, The Saturdays, Pixie Geldof, Jo Wood and even a pregnant Denise Van Outen all took to the catwalk to raise money for the cause.

In a tribute to the late Alexander McQueen, Moss and Halliwell, together with the designer’s muse, Annabelle Neilsen kicked off the show wearing stunning printed dresses from his Spring/Summer 2010 collection.

The show was followed by a charity auction which raised £1 million for the Haiti fund but the total is set to increase with other items still available for online bidding.

Van Outen was positively glowing and the star served as a poignant reminder that The White Ribbon Alliance is deeply concerned with promoting safe pregnancy and childbirth in the wake of the disaster.

Charity patron, Sarah Brown, took to the stage wearing Issa, and gave a speech about the charity’s work and model Tolula Adeyemi nearly came a cropper after slipping over in her vertiginous heels, but fortunately she missed-crowd surfing a front row which included actresses Jolie Richardson and Joanna Lumley, Bob Geldof and Jeanne Marine.

But as LFW begins today, there’s no let up for the fashion pack. However, this year, the democratization of the front row means you don’t even have to twist your ankle on the Somerset House cobbles.  Catch the live streaming at www.londonfashionweek.co.uk
