The Queen’s Year

The outfits, the grandsons, the corgis, the crowns – it’s hard not to feel patriotically bound to Her Majesty. From July 27th The Queen’s Year, the special exhibition at the Summer Opening of Buckingham Palace, will celebrate the Palace finery whilst showing what exactly is involved in the daily life of a Monarch.
The 250+ social events that mark the Queen’s calendar will be documented, showing off the regalia, the outfits the gifts and the artefacts that make each occasion so very British. At the heart of the exhibition you will find a collection of the historical pieces that come into play for ceremonial events, including the Robe of State, which has never been displayed to the public before. Made in 1953 for the Coronation, the red velvet cape and train measure 18ft in total and weighs an impressive 15lb.
See also some more modern day fashions amongst ten of the Queen’s Ascot hats, as well as three evening dresses made by personal courturier Normal Hartnell accompanied by the Vladimir tiara, also a rare appearance.
The Queen’s Year will run from July 27th until 1st October at Buckingham Palace, entry £17/£15 concessions. www.royalcollection.org.uk
