Lawrence Watson

The work of one of Britain’s most celebrated photographers, Lawrence Watson, is now on show at the Londonewcastle Project Space, as well as available to own in a glossy hardback retrospective, in celebration of an iconic career.

Launched in conjunction with Adidas as part of their 60th anniversary, the book shows the rise of the legendary 3-Stripes through snaps of musical artists such as Ian Brown, the Gallaghers, and Run DMC in the early days of hip-hop. Paul Weller became a staple feature, notoriously ditching his record’s existing artwork for photographs taken by a young and as yet unknown Watson. Praise for his work flies in from various music industry names, including former NME colleague James Brown, who describes Watson as having the ability to “capture the raw energy that’s so exciting in the early stages of careers. He captures people before they become blasé”.

Over his 25 year career, Watson has photographed a list of names one could only dream of – having turned his visual skills into music video direction and documentaries, he now returns to his first love, seeing his work published in magazines and newspapers around the world. The newest publication, The World Is Yours, is definitely worth a look. For more information on the exhibition go to www.londonewcastle.co.uk
