Pretty Green

Friday, July 30th, 2010

It isn’t all singing and song-writing at the Oasis camp – Mr Liam Gallagher has officially entered the fashion arena with his new pop-up store on Carnaby Street for his already established label Pretty Green.

The brand offers knitwear, suits, coats, jeans and outerwear taking on classic tailoring details in the cuts and fabrics. Pieces are priced from £45 for a t-shirt to £675 for a premium coat. Influences are drawn from the social and arts scenes of the 1960’s, and are closely monitored by Gallagher himself, who works alongside London tailor Nick Holland to ensure every piece is sharp and fashionable. The 60’s vibe is also mirrored in the décor, which features a panoramic image of Gallagher on Brighton beach in the basement alongside a vintage Lambretta scooter.

The label has already been seen on a host of celebs including footballer Joe Cole and music icon Paul Weller, who has also involved himself in the creative process.

The Pretty Green Temporary store opens today at 57 Carnaby Street, W1; the brand is also available from Selfridges and online at www.prettygreen.com

Now Street Food

Friday, July 30th, 2010

City analysts have long been touting China as the future and now it seems they may have to extend their philosophy to the country’s street cuisine as well.

Now is a new Chinese street food concept store at Liverpool Street Station purveying steaming hexagonal baskets of freshly cooked dumplings, buns and rolls to grab and go.

Inspired by the street stands of Southern China, lunch sees chive and coriander dumplings and chicken won ton soup jostling with salads, prawn balls, seafood sticky rice, hoi sin duck rolls and chocolate and chilli mousse to finish.

Grazing options include seaweed prawn crackers and black sesame and goji berry snaps and for a healthy Shanghai breakfast, nothing beats Chinese rice milk porridge with vanilla, palm sugar, mango and lime although the more adventurous might like to switch their bacon buttie for a char sui pork roll.

Drink lychee and ginger or pear an kumquat iced tea, fresh juices of carrot and ginger or even a a virgin wasabi mary!

Futuristic black and neon packaging mirrors Niclas Sellebraten’s and MACH Design’s interiors of bold  black lacquer surfaces and vibrant murals from Shanghai street signs.

We’d like a West End branch please. Now!

Anise Pop-Up

Thursday, July 29th, 2010

Yup you know it’s been a tough week when rallying the troops to attend the same watering hole requires a bit too much effort! But if you find yourself dissolving into tears on discovering that someone’s organised a breakout group heading to an alternative venue, it might just be time to book an appointment with HR. Unless there was another way…

Ever wish that the bar would come to you?

Well Devonshire Square cocktail bar, Anise, may just have the answer.

The venue is inviting workers to pitch for a free pop-up to have Indian inspired cocktails made in their own office or reception area – for free!

Anise will reward winning teams with signature cocktails, including the Spiced Martini with cinnamon and cardamom house-infused vodka and the Passion and Chilli Caipirinha made with fresh chilli. And a few canapés to soak them up.

The pop-up bar is available to win for an hour on Tuesday or Wednesday afternoons, but workers have to close the deal by convincing Anise exactly why their office deserves it the most – with a 60-word pitch.

Then once a week, Anise will choose a new business partner from the best responses and arrange to ‘pop-up’ for up to 30 people between 4 and 5pm.

The initiative will run until September. To Pitch for a Pop-Up, workers need to email events@cinnamon-kitchen.com with their 60-word pitch.

Touring Angels

Wednesday, July 28th, 2010

Calling all film and history buffs – the legendary Angels of North London has created an official tour for all of those keen to learn a little more about their cavernous warehouses of fine costumes.

Since it was established in 1948 Angels has won numerous Oscars and industry awards for Best Costume, so a tour is likely to evoke some notorious movie memories – or indeed give a sneak peek of things to come. The hour and half sweep of the venue gives a wide-ranging look at the daily life of the World’s Largest Costumiers, as well as pointing out their many glorious achievements across television, film and theatre.

Starting out in Tailoring and Ladies Making departments you’ll see bespoke pieces being made up for current Angels projects, before taking the rather lengthy walk through the Costume Warehouse which holds over 8 miles of rail-space, home to almost 5 million individual items. For those with magpie tendencies, step into the Jewellery Department to experience all things shiny and sparkly.

The Tour is limited to 12 per group, and may be tailored in advance to specific interests. For costs and more information, contact tours@angels.uk.com or call Mark on 020 8202 2244.

D&G for Chelsea

Wednesday, July 28th, 2010

Chelsea Football Club has just announced a new signing.

But it’s not for a player – it’s a three-year partnership with Dolce & Gabbana!

In addition to providing the formal club suits, the iconic fashion house will create a “Dolce&Gabbana Lounge” in the West Stand at Stamford Bridge and redesign the club’s main office reception.

The collaboration was announced last night at a party at the club.

The Italian brand has designed two outfits for the club: a three-piece suit in dark blue with a lion rampart crest on the pocket; and a pair of jeans, a Martini shirt, black sneakers and a black wool coat.

“We are really happy about this partnership and to be able to link our name to such a prestigious club like Chelsea. We are big football fans, for us it means healthy competition, intense passion and great discipline. Football players are style icons both on and off the pitch and, on top of this, there is our love of England and of London, which have always been a source of inspiration for our work.” say dynamic duo Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana
