Les Deux Salons

Monday, May 31st, 2010

Come September, life is to get a whole lot sweeter for fans of Wild Honey and Arbutus restaurants. Their Michelin-starred co-owners, Will Smith and Anthony Demetre have just announced a third London venue.

Named Les Deux Salons, the new French brasserie on Covent Garden’s William IV Street is spread over two floors and will seat 100 on the ground and 50 upstairs with a bar and private dining rooms as well.

The front of house will be headed up by Smith and Demetre is to oversee the kitchen. Craig Johnson who has worked at both Arbutus and Wild Honey and has been with the pair right from the start at Putney Bridge will take the role of head chef.

And although the average spend for diners will be about £18.50 per head, no expense is being spared as far as the interiors are concerned. Responsible for the make-over is Martin Brudnizki, renowned interior designer behind Soho House Group’s Dean Street Townhouse and the Club at the Ivy.

Fever Pitch

Monday, May 31st, 2010

If you’re not looking forward to the World Cup then look away now but otherwise, you’ll be delighted to note that there’s a new pop-up bar in town. In Fulham Broadway to be precise. Yes, Fever Pitch has been created entirely for the summer football season and will be dismantled the day after the final match.

It’s the brainchild of pub and bar entrepreneur Brenhan Magee who has spent a whopping £200,000 creating the bar on the former site of the King’s Head pub. Magee recently sold his share in Warwick Street’s Club Bar & Dining.

Starting with the England v USA on 12 June, footy fans can enjoy a pint or two while watching Frank Lampard, Wayne Rooney & Co battle it out on one of the venue’s 13 screens which span 360 degrees and cover every wall in the 400 capacity venue. Fulham WAGS and football widows can take advantage of generous outside space to top up their tans.

And to soak up the beer, there’ll be match-day hotdogs and a selection of breville toasties filled with British favourites from ham and mustard to cheese and tomato or even foie gras with apricots and chilli jam if you’re feeling continental.

So what can we expect when Fever Pitch pops down? Well, Magee has taken on a 20-year lease for the property in collaboration with Enterprise Inns so following the Cup Final, work will commence to open up the first and second floors and turn the venue it into a new pub/restaurant.

Apple launches ipad Worldwide

Friday, May 28th, 2010

Finally Apple has launched its iPad across the world – and enthusiasts have been queuing for hours to get their hands on the gadget. The gadget comes on sale in the UK almost two months after the product first went on sale in the US – and it is now on Apple store shelves everywhere else, too.

The iPad is more than just a glorified e-reader. A standard iPod connector allows you to attach an external keyboard, route video to your HD TV or projector, and upload photos from your iPhone. Web browsing is fluid and simple, although, like the iPhone and iPod Touch, there’s no support for Adobe Flash. “Typical” battery grants 10 hours of life from a full charge, and up to a month of standby time when not in use.

The most significant development (I feel), is the ability to purchase books live on your personal bookshelf, wood effect and all, and when a full-color cover is touched, the iBook opens—literally the cover opens up—onto your screen to the first page.

If you have been reluctant to embrace techno tools in the past, well, you’ve come to a rather dramatic crossroads. The basic 16GB model will cost you £429, rising to £699 for the 64GB 3G model. You’ll also need a contract for 3G models to work with mobile broadband. 3 is offering the pick of the lot, with 10GB of data for just £15 a month. O2, Vodafone and Orange are also offering micro SIM-based deals.

The iPad has been heralded by Apple itself as “revolutionary” while early reviews have praised the touchscreen tablet for its all-round skills, style and killer apps. However, it’s not been without it problems, with Wi-Fi niggles dominating discussion amongst US iPad owners

Sex & The City2 Premiere

Thursday, May 27th, 2010

Two years is a long old time in fashion. At the UK premier for SATC 2 no one wore red and Sarah Jessica Parker thankfully left the garden display at the Chelsea Flower Show where it belongs. Everyone’s favourite style queen looked amazing, though admittedly, after her ensemble of last time around, she really didn’t have much to live up to!

This year’s McQueen was utter sophistication – a floor-length full skirt in which it would be nigh-on impossible for even the most shrinking of viotets not to flounce. And then there was the hat: Philip Treacy’s finest with a nod to the Folies Bergère.

Otherwise, Cynthia Nixon in Narciso Rodriguez had a touch of the Desperate Housewives about her and should really lose those hair extensions; Kim Cattrall worked the 1940′s icon look like a true pro – she wore Thierry Mugler and her hair was set rock solid so it didn’t move one iota! Kristin Davis dazzled in vintage Norman Norell and a Judith Leiber bag and then all the girls wore jewels by Fred Leighton.

The capital’s celebrities were out in force as well: Gok Wan (who played master of ceremonies), Emma Bunton, Peaches Geldof, Stacey Solomn (screeching her now patented ‘ohmygod’ catchphrase), Alice Eve, Daisy Lowe (who sees herself as SATC’s Charlotte btw but scuttled off when asked about her love life), Alexandra Burke, Paul O’Grady, Jamelia and Rachel Stevens to name but a few. Oh yes and Alan Carr who admitted to having a soft spot for ‘the ginger one’ because ‘my brother’s ginger and I feel a bit sorry for them’.

Movie journalists are not usually renowned for their sense of style as they spend a lot of time in the dark and are generally more likely to sport a plastic carrier bag than anything else but the back of the SATC press pen in Leicester Square Gardens saw a phalanx of statement handbags where their fashionable owners had positioned them while they fought to grab a word with the stars (and also the urge to sneeze repeatedly due to the ubiquitous pollen).

In the movie, Carrie moans that she’s more ‘Coco Chanel than Coq au Vin’ when Big suggests she cook him dinner but overheard quote of the evening goes to the girl who said (of a passing Emma Roberts): ‘Look how thin she is! That’s how I want to look on my wedding day. I want people to worry I won’t make it up the aisle!’

Rhubarb opens in Bond & Brook

Thursday, May 27th, 2010

Popular Events caterer Rhubarb is to open a new in-store restaurant, Bond & Brook, in the revamped Fenwick store in Bond Street in August. The news comes shortly after Rhubard have just confirmed that they are to provide the in-lounge catering for all First and Business Class American Airlines passengers at Heathrow. Operating buffet style menus at the brand new Flagship Lounge and Admirals Lounge means they  will serve “rhubarb” food to over 600 passengers a day.

Located on the second floor, Bond & Brook represents the first project undertaken by consultancy firm A Private View, the partnership of Evening Standard restaurant critic Fay Maschler and journalist and broadcaster Simon Davis.

The all-day restaurant, which will operate during the store’s opening hours, will feature US-born Daniel Taylor as head chef. Taylor joins Rhubarb from Le Café Anglais where he worked for restaurateur Rowley Leigh.

Bond & Brook opens on 2 August following the three-year store expansion and refurbishment programme. In addition, the Affogato Bar will open on the third floor. Designed by Tom Bartlett of Waldo Works, it will serve coffees and a range of sweet pastries and canape style eats.
