All War and No Peace
Monday, January 25th, 2010
“The Last Station” is an adaptation of the novel by Jay Parinia, based on the last years of “War and Peace” author Leo Tolstoy’s life. Parinia and Director Michael Hoffman, who also wrote the script for the film, will attend the London premiere on Tuesday January 26th, along with the rest of the star cast, which includes Christopher Plummer, Helen Mirren and James McAvoy.
The Last Station is set during the last year of the life and turbulent marriage of the great Russian writer Leo Tolstoy (Christopher Plummer)and his wife the Countess Sofya (Helen Mirren). The film depicts the savage rivalry for his attention and legacy between his redoubtable wife of nearly fifty years and his devious disciple, Vladimir Chertkov (Paul Giamatti) which, overshadowed the end of his life.
Unable to solve the conflict, Tolstoy, in his final days, makes a run for peace on a train with his physician, his daughter (Anne-Marie Duff) and Valentin Bulgakov (James McAvoy). Sofya and Chertkov follow, but, too ill to continue, Tolstoy stops at the tiny railway station at Astapovo. While hundreds camp outside awaiting hourly reports, it is here, at a remote railway junction, that Leo Tolstoy finds the peace he has been searching for.
