Freggo’s Winter Warmers

Thursday, November 19th, 2009

When Freggo, the fine purveyor of Argentine delights, hit Swallow Street at the start of summer, sweet-toothed Londoners couldn’t believe their luck. The ice-cream bar owned by Gaucho, whose flagship restaurant is handily located next door, has gone from strength to strength, proving that when it comes to dessert, only the best and most original will do.

Renowned as a “bar” rather than a “parlour”, Freggo’s emulates the distinctive culture of its homeland, where according to operations manager Michael Di Palma such bars are located on every corner and serve their delicious treats until the early hours. Favourites in the London branch are the three variants of dulce de leche, the glutinous caramel which has become one of South America’s favourite exports, and the wine-flavoured malbec – combining wine and ice cream? Now that’s smart thinking.

Even if you have already experienced the Freggo bar, their new winter menu is something yet to try. Embracing the cold British weather, Freggo will be offering Monmouth coffees, hot chocolates, crepes, toasted sandwiches, frittatas and medialunas for a sweet indulgence at breakfast. Need we say more?

Mooli Magic

pork-mooli

Forget the tikka touts of Brick Lane, the newly opened Mooli’s in Soho is serving its eponymous fresh take on Indian street food positioned somewhere between Old Dehli and Tokyo.

Each mooli is packed full of warm flavoursome fillings such as Keralan Beef, Goan Pork, Chicken & Apple, Asparagus & Cumin Potatoes or Scrambled Paneer and combined with zesty salsa, vibrant chutneys and crunchy salad, all rolled in a fresh homemade roti.

Brains behind the brand is Sam Singh, a former management consultant and Mathew Chandy a former city lawyer. They have teamed up with head chef Raju Rawat of Benares, the famous Michelin starred restaurant in Mayfair.  Yet with price points between £2.45 and £4.45, Mooli’s is infinitely more affordable.

Sam and Mathew both grew up in India but after spending many years in the UK, the desire to eat fresh delicious Indian cuisine on-the-go led them to quit their highly paid city jobs and travel the Indian contintent for months researching the killer recipes.  Their journey took them from the kitchens of a Nawab in Lucknow and the streets of Calcutta to the heart of Goa and Mathew’s family home in Kerala.  They put their City-honed skills to good use along the way, though, playing online poker to pay their bills.

Now, having road-tested their efforts at Brick Lane’s Sunday Upmarket, they’ve finally unleashed their prowess onto the streets of Soho and the Frifth Street venue designed by Kevin Fellingham and Nick Hornig is open for business.

Throughout the month of November Mooli’s will be offering a different group a free meal every day. The lucky demographic will be announced on the Mooli blog (www.moolis.blogspot.com) and twitterfeed (www.twitter.com/moolis). So far, Germans (to celebrate the anniversary of the fall of the Berlin wall), gentlemen with moustaches (because they get enough stick as it is) and customers with yellow scarves (just because) have all benefited.

Who’s next?  … it could be you!

Prada Book

Wednesday, November 18th, 2009

Today November 18, 2009, Prada unveils a new book documenting the company’s experimental, often ground-breaking work in fashion, architecture, film and art over the last three decades. The book launch will take place at a special party at Prada’s store in Old Bond Street followed by events staged at selected Prada flagship stores worldwide as well as the three unique Epicenters in New York, Los Angeles and Tokyo.

At once a chronology, documentary and catalogue raisonné, the book charts a creative endeavor that defies the narrow definition of a fashion house. The partnership between designer Miuccia Prada and entrepreneur Patrizio Bertelli has generated an ever-widening sphere of projects that start from fashion and accessories and spiral out to include photography, advertising campaigns, events and parties, interior design, industrial design, technological development, architecture, art commission/collection and exhibition, publishing, philanthropy and beyond.

prada book-0039

Conceived of and edited by Miuccia Prada and Patrizio Bertelli in collaboration with long-time creative contributors Michael Rock and Sung Joong Kim of 2×4, New York City, the 708-page book traces this unique story from inside out. The concept was to look at the entire creative output of the organization and draw connections between the focused work of the design studio and the workshop, the extensive creative partnerships with photographers, designers, architects and film directors, all the way out to the large scale architectural commissions, the art foundation and the development of a new museum.

The book will be available to the public at Prada stores worldwide as well as on prada.com and selected bookshops, starting in November of this year.

Disney Couture Pixie Collection

Pixie Collection

It seems the world has fallen in love with Disney again.  What with the popular heart-wrenching animation ‘Up’ and the hysteria surrounding Zefron’s performance in ‘High School Musical,’ it’s no surprise that fashionable jewellery brand Disney Couture have clocked onto this and are running with it.

Their new Pixie Collection has just been launched in stores this Autumn and as you can imagine the stars of tinsel town have leapt on it.  However, it hasn’t taken long for this side of the ocean to fall for it too.

Combining both the youth and enchantment of Disney with quality associated with normal high end accessories, the Pixie collection is inspired by Peter Pan’s well loved friend, Tinkerbell. The pieces include rings that open to reveal hidden trinkets, earrings with entwined, delicate details reminiscent of Tinkerbell’s surroundings, charm bracelets and cascading gold necklaces with lockets or pendants inscribed with Neverland thoughts.  All of the items have assorted gems attached to them, giving an individual and personal effect.

With practically more adults showing off their new collection than children, it seems fitting that the Pixie collection is associated with Neverland, a world where adults never grow up.

Disney Couture jewellery can be bought online at Asos.
