Pollocks ‘Worthless’ Exhibition
Thursday, April 30th, 2009
Following his success last year with the Blank Canvas Exhibition, Josef Valentino, the founder and creative director of Pollocks, is launching ‘Worthless’ – a live art installation that explores the value of material items.
Inspired by the recession to create something positive, Valentino intends to explore the concept that one man’s junk is another man’s treasure, challenging current perceptions of ‘worth’. Members of the public will be invited to bring their own ‘worthless’ items into the pop-store and have them transformed into pieces of art.
The Worthless store event will pay homage to the institution that was Woolworths, via ironic references throughout the installation space. A team of Pollocks creatives will be working continually in the basement workshop on the transformations. The experience culminates for participants when on collection of their item, the customer will be asked how much they now think the item is worth. This amount is what the customer will then pay for the item, and all proceeds will be split equally between Pollocks and the artists. The pick of ‘worthless to priceless’ creations will be exhibited in the store from 1st – 5th June with several items being auctioned on behalf of the ‘MS Society’.
Valentino established Pollocks twelve months ago with a simple blogger site allowing artists to submit their work for digital exhibition. Essentially a website, its aim was to be an online playground where young people could share and discuss their art work, whether it be a performance art video, interview or even a fashion shoot.
Last year Blank Canvas attracted some high profile names such as Marc Quinn, Annie Lennox, Levi Palmer and Rankin and Valentino promises another impressive line-up for this event.
‘Worthless’ runs from 22nd – 29th May in Seven Dials.
