Superior chocolate maker Rococo has teamed up with equally exclusive parent-and-child club The Purple Dragon in a fabulous new giveaway. Rococo has created a chocolate bar and, in the style of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, has hidden various prizes amongst the bars on sale to offer customers some luxurious prizes.

First prize is a year’s bespoke members’ package to Purple Dragon worth a mighty £1200, giving a child unlimited access to the club’s unique range of play activities and facilities. The venue, which opened in 2008 in Battersea Park, covers over a thousand square feet and contains a brasserie run by a Michelin star chef, a science lab, a recording studio, and classes in pretty much everything one could possibly desire to learn. The membership offers a retreat for frazzled parents too, with beauty rooms, drop-off sessions, and a perfectly designed relaxation area.

Other prizes for ticket-holders include day passes, lunches, and a “Pamper and Play” session at the club. Rococo are selling the Purple Dragon Chocolate Bar at their three London stores, situated on King’s Road, Marylebone High Street, and Motcomb Street; also online at www.rococochocolates.com and available at the Purple Dragon.

If you are on a quest for the most exquisite porcelain, if you are looking for inspiration for the perfect afternoon tea or even if you just want to admire some beautiful craftsmanship, then head to Fortnum & Mason next month. The Piccadilly store will play host for their new teapot exhibition which will run from April 6 until May 31 this year.

The exhibition will be Herend china’s first UK showcase in over a decade and will include selected pieces from the Herend museum. To celebrate 301 years of business, 301 Herend teapots will be for sale alongside more contemporary crockery and vases.

The auction will be a ticketed evening event, hosted by antiques expert Eric Knowles. All proceeds will be donated to the Cutty Sark Conservation Project. The Cutty Sark was built as a tea clipper in 1869 and was one of the fastest sailing ships in the Great Tea Race from China. However in May 2007 the Cutty Sark was destroyed by a fire so all funds raised will go towards its restoration.

Visitors of the store will be able to see the exhibition on the first floor with the auction taking place on the 28th April 2009 from 6.30pm to 9.30pm in the St James’s Restaurant at Fortnum & Mason. Tickets cost £15 and are available from Fortnum & Mason, 0845 300 1707 or  email orders@fortnumandmason.co.uk.

Stanley Johnson, I Presume?

Father of London mayor, Boris Johnson, Stanley, is releasing his memoirs for the first time tomorrow. The memoirs have already been serialised in The Times but readers will be able to go and buy their own complete copy from bookstores this week. He said to The Handbook, ‘On the whole I tried to keep the tone of the book light. There’s enough gloom about at the moment!’

And it appears that the charismatic author already has a flurry of admirers. Usually stern-faced Anne Robinson says, ‘A wonderful jaw-dropping account of a rollercoaster life. Johnson senior does not disappoint… the book is a triumph.’ And fellow writer Dame Joan Bakewell comments, ‘Boris has done for Livingstone; now it’s Stanley’s turn. There’s no-one I’d rather go into the jungle with.’ Even actress Zoe Wannamaker is a fan: ‘He writes with the wit and humour of a true raconteur,’ she coos.

The side-splitting memoir charts Stanley Johnson’s life from his early childhood – his father, an RAF pilot in the Second World War, crash-lands a Wellington bomber on a Devon airfield and this is where his story starts – his adventurous post school travels, when he rode a motorcycle 4,000 miles from London to Afghanistan, tracing the route of Marco Polo with two friends are chronicled as is his work for billionaire John D. Rockefeller and of course the birth of his loveable gaffe-prone son Boris.

Look out for the front cover featuring a wistful Stanley staring into the distance. The bright blonde bombshell looks that were inherited from Turkish descendents clearly run in the family and you could be forgiven for mistaking the young Stanley for his son. Barts

Wednesday, March 18th, 2009

The Chelsea Cloisters have had some unusual press over the years so it was an interesting choice of venue for nightclub Moguls Charlie Gilkes and Duncan Stirling to base their latest addition to their Caribbean inspired clubs. However, although there were looks of anxiety from scantily dressed girls entering into the former love haven hotel, once you’ve taken a swift left, been vetted through the peep hole and have entered through the door, you’re instantly reassured that once again the Gilkes Stirling combo have done it again.

A step away from the more sophisticated and modern Kitts, Barts is true to its Carribean namesake with haphazard decoration, hand picked by the owners themselves from car boot sales all over England. It all works and brings back a much-needed feeling of summer to the gloominess that has been looming over London.

With pub prices but holiday atmosphere, there’s a feeling you’ve stepped into some sort of surreal wonderland and you can almost feel the heat from outside - at last, a bar which couldn’t have come at a better time for the market.

Quiksilver Women

Wednesday, March 18th, 2009

Quiksilver, the surfing and lifestyle brand, hosted an exclusive evening of live music and artistic creativity last week at the legendary Bush Hall, to celebrate their current hunt for the new ambassadors of the Quiksilver network.

It was the first time that all European artists currently supported by Quiksilver had joined together for a single event – featuring fashion/art photographer Bara Prasilova from Prague, and music from acoustic acts such as Charlotte O’Connor, Ellia Lawson and Anna Leddra Chapman, the arty and chilled-out vibe reflected perfectly the philosophy of the brand. Later in the evening DJ Mahara McKay tore up the dancefloor with her skill on the decks, adding a perfect ending to a successful event. Throughout the evening Quiksilver for Women collected entries from female artists from the worlds of Fashion, Photography and Art for the coveted position of brand ambassador, to be decided in June 2009. The winner will promote and support the entire Quiksilver empire, embodying all that is Quiksilver Women.
