Saturday, January 31st, 2009

With THAT day looming on the horizon, if the best you can expect for Valentine’s Day from your man-of the-moment is a wilting offering from the garage forecourt, now is the time to point him in the direction of Rebel Rebel.

The London-based design company which specialises in flowers has a top client list from Christian Dior to the Ritz. It won admirers for its trademark flowers in a handbag creation and is renowned for giving a brilliant contemporary twist to its designs with a mix of exotic buds and native flowers.

Mariah’s big win

Thursday, January 29th, 2009

For those of you who had the misfortune to sit through Mariah Carey’s limp offering in the critically panned Glitter, you’ll be shocked to hear that there’s been a surprise turn around for the singer turned actress.

Mariah Carey’s latest film Push has already received rave reviews and been a huge success at the recent Sundance Film festival. The film won two major awards, picking up the prestigious Audience and Grand Jury accolades in the US Dramatic Competition on the last day of the Utah festival.

The film is based on Push: A Novel by Sapphire and tells the story of Precious Jones, an illiterate and overweight teenager struggling to overcome the struggles of life in Harlem.

Mariah plays a social worker, Lenny Kravitz plays a nurse and Mo’Nique features as Precious’ mother.

Mariah said:

“The material is so great that I’m just privileged to be part of it.”

Hopefully it’ll be so good that we’ll all forget that Glitter ever happened…

A Cold Wintour

Wednesday, January 28th, 2009

Sienna Miller reportedly fell foul of Vogue editor Anna Wintour during a photoshoot for a cover of the US version of the magazine.

Apparently, the well respected fashion editor found the actress too ‘toothy’ and her hair ‘unruly’ during her Mario Testino photoshoot for the February edition in 2007.

And staff are said to have complained that the young star had ‘too many fillings’, captured in a behind-the-scenes documentary called The September Issue. The programme also reveals that she was airbrushed and designers took a photo of her face and pasted it on another shot of her body.

This is not the first time Sienna has been criticised for her looks; the actress reportedly lost her role as Maid Marian in Nottingham for being too thin and making co-star Russell Crowe look too old and too fat. But surely he does that on his own…

But as the backlash begins, the magazine has already issued a statement defending Sienna’s beauty, with head of communications Patrick O’Connell saying:

“While some retouching is a fact for any cover, no one is more convinced of Ms Miller’s beauty than Vogue.

‘The fact she’s appeared on the magazine’s September cover, our most important issue of the year, is a testimony to this truth.”

Sienna’s publicist added:

“Sienna Miller is the first person to admit that her photos are always retouched – no one is ever perfect.”

Not even Sienna, it seems…

Off the List

Wednesday, January 28th, 2009

When tailcoats and top hats are becoming de rigeur and your trivial pursuit on English counties is becoming startlingly good, you know you’ve finally reached the age of the weddings.

Off The List

And you’ll know all about the list….However, Antique dealer Guy Tobin has created a website which will save you from lacklustre ones and take you controversially – “Off the List.” Launched last Monday the website celebrates his love of antiques and those of the more enterprising ilk will be thankful there is not a toaster in sight.

Ranging from ebony tigers and mother of pearls draught boards, Tobin has managed to bring back some ebullience to your wedding shopping. Gone are days of wandering round home design shops, finally an effortlessly easy website which will make the most disorderly guest look organised.

With prices ranging from under £50 to £100 and above, you won’t even be strayed by some commission basis shopkeeper. Who knew shopping for others could be so much fun?

Topshop EDIT

Wednesday, January 28th, 2009

Topshop’s Oxford Circus flagship will be playing host to an exclusive pop-up boutique showcasing sparkling new international talent from February 15th.

The “EDIT” concession has already previewed, and is home to collections such as KTZ-UK by Marian Pejorskis, featuring huge colourful jewels, and White Trumpet by Reno Inchenko, who uses bright geometrics with origami folding and fringing. The boutique will rotate designers, with seven collections on sale for just four weeks, with five more to follow in March.

Topshop has long been a supporter of new and exciting designers, with the flagship’s basement already a renowned treasure chest of kooky one-offs and vintage pieces. The company’s New Gen sponsorship continues to nurture new names in fashion across the globe. It is a commitment which works well for the high street giant, pulling in a wider and more diverse crowd. Antonia O’Malley for Topshop Concessions said “We know our customers will love this most directional of collectives” – we think she’s right.
