Haris Brompton Road

Hari’s, the celebrity haunt in Brompton Road, is not simply for hair. Above the salon is a spa haven, which offers a wide range of facials and even caters for a teenage facial designed to teach teenagers ways to clean their skin effectively.

Hari’s calls their treatments “pampering with a purpose” and their beauty team are always on the lookout for new and effective ways to improve and spoil your skin. The most recent addition is the Ole Henrikson facial. Once a secret kept only amongst the coterie of celebrities, Ole Henrikson products contain naturally active ingredients from nature which instantly improves the quality of your skin. Now word is out though and Ole Henrikson has been brought from Los Angeles to London.

It was therefore this facial that I bee-lined for. Gita, my facialist, customizes their facials and body treatments to suit exactly what your skin needs and even offers nutritional advice. Not only was my facial the most relaxing one ever but also I immediately noticed a complete change. Gita doesn’t just work on steaming and exfoliating but actually gives oil massages with lymphatic drainage along with arm, shoulders and head decollate massage and it comes as no surprise to discover that she also incorporates reiki into her facials if required.

Hari’s handpick their products, Ole Henriksen, Darphin and Speizia being amongst their favourites. In doing this it means that they are able to offer anything that your skin needs. Whether it’s a stress-shifting massage or a serious wake-up call for sluggish skin, there is no question that Hari’s delivers results and the good news is the results only get better.  Within a few days I definitely had comments and compliments about the condition of my skin. It’s no wonder Ole Henriksen’s products have long been a Hollywood beauty secret and I strongly recommend you head down to Hari’s before it gets out even more.

Paris Hilton

So, Paris is feeling the crunch too? Last time the heiress was in town reports claim she was given £70,000 in appearance fees. This year however, the nightclubs have not been so welcoming. Despite asking for £50,000 from Paper, the nightclub was so prescriptive in how they wanted Paris to spend the evening that she declined to go. Whisky Mist refused to pay and the only one that managed to cough up was Movida but this time Paris was only able to squeeze £25,000 out of them.

Here to promote her new TV show, My New Best Friend, which follows Paris around London searching for a new friend, we’ll be watching this space to see how Paris’ next moves work out for her.

Bull Sperm Treatment

Most girls have tried a fair few strange things in their hair, from lemon juice to mashed avocado for the more adventurous, but even I was hesitant when the widely acclaimed Hari’s salon’s recommended a new treatment. The Aberdeen Organic Bull Sperm treatment is the latest craze for the avid hairdresser client and is touted as being the ultimate experience.

The ingredients, which actually includes Bull sperm, also contains Katera root from an Iranian plant and produces unbelievable results. Both of the star ingredients are packed with protein and moisturiser, leaving the hair with a thicker and shinier texture. You’ll be glad to know the treatment is odourless and it’s simply placed onto small sections throughout the hair, then put under a steamer and left for 45 minutes.

After a wash and blow-dry the hair is completely transformed, feeling thicker and healthier and it’s especially good for those that dye their hair. Even after several washes at home my hair remains strong and silky and I am told it continues this way for a month. No wonder it’s dubbed Viagra for hair.

If you want to take the indulgence even further then opt for a fantastic cut and reshaping with one of their highly skilled stylists. I had Jesus who managed to convert my hair into a layered, healthy head of locks whilst expertly keeping the length. Hari’s is well known for its celebrity following and for those who want to give their neglected winter tresses an extra boost, then Hari’s is you answer.

Election Style

Wednesday, October 29th, 2008

There is now less than a week to go until the election of the next President of the United States. For months, the key issues have been debated, televised, and scrutinised; the political gauntlets have been well and truly thrown; and now the world waits with baited breath for a result. Much has been made of the rising costs of the candidates’ campaigns – and if we in Britain felt we were lacking in our offerings of (monetary) support, now may be the best, and indeed the only remaining time to make that move.

Obama’s “Runway To Change” collection has proved a profitable venture in both dollars and column inches, having attracted big-name designers to collaborate on exclusive designs for the 2008 election. Amongst the standard badges, posters and bumper stickers adorned with Obama’s picture and speech snippets are great finds from names such as Zac Posen, Alexander Wang and Marc Jacobs – the slogan tees, in particular, reminiscent of the iconic taglines of Katherine Hamnett. Also available, although in increasingly short supply, are pieces from influential American artists such as Jonathan Hoefler and Robert Indiana. Michelle Obama, whose personal style has featured in both US and UK Vogue over the past few months, has also won invaluable press coverage for smaller but expanding names such as Thakoon and Maria Pinto through her choice of outfits for key televised events.

Although too early to deem Obama completely successful in his electoral campaign, such efforts to infiltrate popular culture will surely have made a critical difference in alerting young people to the key election issues. Whether it’s through a particularly heartfelt speech or a fabulously designed tote, politics is about attention-grabbing, and Obama’s Runway is definitely a tactic to be remembered.

Patricia Field

Tuesday, October 28th, 2008

We’ve had Stella at H&M. Celia Birtwell at TopShop. Mouret at Gap.

And now this, the queen of the SATC dynasty selling her wares at the UK’s favourite high-street store. More famous for its standard cotton basics than its glittering couture, Marks & Spencer has taken a bold step in collaborating with kooky Pat Field, and sadly some of the pieces demonstrate how Bradshaw’s brashness will never work for the masses – however to miss this completely would most definitely be missing out. Some of the dresses are truly inventive and new, their inspiration having been drawn from the carefully sourced vintage used throughout SATC.

Full marks go to the Rose Puffball Dress, which layers pencil and puffball skirts to create a new, modern silhouette, and the iconic studded belt which features heavily in the movie at SJP’s request – and really, who are we to argue ?
