135 Years of The Criterion

On 2 February London’s landmark Criterion Restaurant celebrated 135 years of fabulous dining with a star-studded anniversary dinner for 100 invited guests including Jaime Winstone, Rhys Iffans, Trinny Woodall, Lara Bohnic, Jessie and Tilly Wood, Jo Wood, David Gandy, Pam Hogg, Stephen and Assia Webster, Mike Figgis, Marie Helvin and James Rousseau.
The evening began with a glittering reception where Laurent Perrier Champagne, Karlsson’s Gold Vodka and Louis XIII Remy Martin helped to get the party started alongside some luxurious canapés.
There followed by a lavish three course dinner of Poached native lobster, Galloway beef fillet and Velhrona chocolate tart – lovingly prepared by executive chef Matthew Foxon.
And after dinner, model Daisy Lowe who attended with mum Pearl was invited to cut the birthday cake and did the honours with aplomb.
Originally opened in 1873 it was at the fabled restaurant that Sir Arthur Conan Doyle first imagined the meeting between Dr. Watson and the enigmatic Sherlock Holmes. The Criterion was also the venue of choice for the brave suffragettes and Winston Churchill and David Lloyd George met there regularly as they shaped the future of British politics.
This is one old lady who’s certainly not for turning …
