Christmas wouldn’t be the same without all those holiday staples - mince pies, pantos, snogging under the mistletoe and of course a proliferation of good old fashioned pop-ups. Sketch at the Royal Academy continues the gallery’s proud tradition that saw Bistrotheqe’s Flash restaurant taking up residence last year. Pierre Gagnaire and Mourad Mazouz, will launch their pop-up café on December 3rd for two months to coincide with the GSK Contemporary, Earth exhibition. Complementing the exhibition’s theme - an artistic response to the climate change debate - the café aims to reduce unnecessary food miles and will adopt a sustainable philosophy in both its design and operation – a breath of fresh air in this season of conspicuous consumption.
Eat in and take away menus will feature local British produce prepared with Gagnaire’s French flair from morning Viennoiserie to lunchtime pâtés and rillettes, plus, of course, the petite pastries and cakes that we’ve come to know and love at Sketch. There will also be an oyster bar and a Crêperie in the outdoor portico complete with handmade patchwork rugs and hot-water bottles – no gas guzzling burners here thank you very much!
Pommery Champagne has also produced a limited run of POP Earth fizz made from sustainably produced grapes and sold in cute recyclable 75cl bottles with labels printed in water soluble ink. Even the furniture is constructed from 100% recycled heavy-duty cardboard, some of which is being painted by the children from the charity, Kids Company.
Across the park in Kensington, the Serpentine Bar & Kitchen is opening its own Christmas restaurant in conjunction with Hyde Park’s Winter Wonderland. Prepare for a seasonal feast of old fashioned British food and drink in its festive marquee by the lake next to Patrick Gwynne’s iconic building.
Sit on communal wooden benches and feel the love to the tune of live folk music and the delicious scent of spruce trees. Wash down traditional hog roasts and homemade plum pudding with spiced mulled wine and flavoured schnapps or more contemporary fare including roasted guinea fowl and chestnut stuffing with pigs in blankets and a juniper jus or whole roasted trout with spinach and sorrel.
Finally if you're after something a little more boutique, head to members' club Home House, for its pop-up winter snug within the private courtyard gardens. As the nights draw in, ‘Le Fumoir Snug’ will become a cosy den where winter revelers can mix and mingle to their hearts’ content. Designed in the style of a 19th Century smoking lounge, the snug is decked with cracked-leather Georgian armchairs and hand-made sofas and the walls adorned with ancient maps and portraits.
And the best thing about festive pop-ups? Unlike your Christmas decorations, it’s not up to you to dismantle them come Twelfth Night.
