Time for City boys to come out of hiding. Two new East-side venues are sure to tempt even the most chastened party animals out of retirement.
Just like the legend of Atlantis, there have been whispers for some time but finally, it's official. This month, Nick House and Piers Adam, mogels behind Mayfair's enduringly popular Mahiki Club are opening a new Polynesian themed paradise of a bar in the City.
Taking its name from the Tiki God of the Sea, Kanaloa, is a laid back tropical island that guests enter via a wooden bridge. Think Tiki motifs, fresh flowers and a long black bamboo bar surrounded by carved wooden pillars and lit with lampshades made from exotic seashells. And that's before we even get to the dance floor with its elevated booths over-looking the action and colour changing ceiling to reflect the party mood.
A lounge will feature a crazy paving stone floor and rattan screens but the design highlight by far are the Tiki treehouses of the Kanaloa retreat, transporting punters to the Polynesian rainforests. Hide away in the branches, release your inner child and watch the not inconsiderable talent hanging out underneath before making your move! Groups can sip on an Octopus punch, Papa Jules' brand new sharing cocktail for eight people, though remember boys, it's no excuse for roving hands!
The club is actually a joint venture between House, Adam and celebrity pairing Girls Alouds' Sarah Harding and DJ boyfriend, Tom Crane. Party queen Harding, is routing for the ladies and has ensured free entry for the girls – not to mention complimentary manicures, massages and makeovers. We know where we're coming when we break a nail.
Slightly more grown-up is the new venture from Danielle and Alex Proud. The husband and wife team behind Proud Gallery and its cutting edge club Proud Camden, have just expanded into the City of London with new supper club venture, Proud Cabaret. Designed by the inimitable team at Russell Sage Studios, the decadent subterranean space is styled on a 1920's speakeasy with plush booths and purple velvet curtains evoking the illicit glamour of a bygone era.
Entertainment is cabaret, jazz and burlesque and happily a world away from Spearmint Rhino or similar such City establishments. The supper club format sees evenings hosted by a raft of famous promoters. First up is Folly! set to be as decadent as a Berlin Cabaret club during the Weimar years and featuring a sizzling line up from Earl Okin to Dusty Limits, Bobby Valentino and DJ EL Nino.
Food is resolutely British fare served by an army of waitresses in flapper dresses who will try very hard to keep their feathers out of your Beef Wellington or Lobster Thermidore. But we're sure you'll be having too much fun to mind.
